Weekend in Western Germany

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

A few weekends ago, Liebling and I spent the weekend in Usseln, a tiny town located Western Germany, where we spent a disproportionate amount of time eating and taking in the very pretty landscape.

While I’ve been to Berlin 7 times, I am a neophyte when it comes to the other cities in Deutschland.  In fact, before this visit to Usseln, I had never been to any other area in Germany.  For this reason, I was excited to see how this teeny tiny “blink and you’ll miss it” town in the western part of Germany would compare to the urban sprawl of Berlin, Liebling’s hometown.

Usseln is almost ghostly calm compared to Germany’s funky, noisy capital in the east.  From first glance it was evident that things move at a lot slower pace here. The streets were lonely and the few people I did see out were in their golden years.

That said, the tidy streets and adorable houses won me over right away. Everything was so quaint!

Our main purpose for the trip was to visit Liebling’s oma (grandma), who had just celebrated her 86th birthday.  During our stay we lay our heads at the Post Hotel Usseln, a hotel owned and managed by Liebling’s aunt and uncle.  The hotel has been in their family for generations and quite the big deal in Usseln- it is booked solid most weekends by nature lovers looking to ski or hike in the surrounding area.  The weekend we were there, Liebling’s aunt had only just managed to scrounge up a (lush!) room for us. Expect an upcoming post reviewing the hotel soon!

As I said above, we didn’t do much over the weekend except for visit with family, eat, and relax. Liebling’s lovely mama, however, did make sure I got to do some sightseeing as it was my first time outside of Berlin.  Taking advantage of the crisp autumn weather and bright sunlight, we took a walk through the countryside.

She also made sure to bring Liebling and I to a local restaurant that was very German in aspect and offerings.

One reason that I adore coming to Germany so much is because with a German as a partner, I get a real ‘inside scoop’ on German culture, language, and food.  Liebling and his family are always eager to introduce me too all things Deutsch, things I wouldn’t have tried or known about had I not been involved with a German.

Have you ever been to Germany? Does it interest you to go?

  • I have been to Germany numerous times. Never Berlin though. It’s on the list! I have a good friend who lives in Northern Bavaria and I go to visit her every two or three years. Last year I spent Christmas with her and her family – it was fabulous! Traditional Xmas meal of duck, red cabbage and dumplings with lots of wine and sweets. 🙂 We went to lots of Xmas markets – large and small!!! I love Germany!!

  • I’ll be on the west side in six days!!! I hope I see some quaint places such as this! Your posts on Germany have been a lifesaver as I gear up to go so thank you so much!!

  • I’ve been living in Germany for 10 years now and absolutely love it. This town looks a lot like my Lil village…cute and quiet!

  • How fun and that dessert is making me SO hungry! I spent time in Trier when my then-boyfriend/now-husband was there for work a few years ago. It’s wine country on the border of Luxembourg and I really enjoyed it! The food was great and everyone was so friendly. Looking forward to when I can return some day!

  • It looks so serene and beautiful. It looks like you had loads of fun. I see your hair is sprouting beautifully and looking fab. Take care.

  • I’ve only been to Frankfurt and that was a long time ago. I think it would nice to see more of the country.

    • I had the same thought!! LOL!! I’ve only been to the airports in Germany (Munich & Frankfurt), but I know that a lot of my blog readers are from Germany, so it’s definitely on the radar in the future for a Take A Leap segment.

  • My Mom and Grandparents are from Essen, Germany. I went a couple of times with them to Germany and I looooved feeling like I was with insiders. 🙂

  • I’ve been to Germany about 8 times. Everyone was very nice and helpful to us while we were out seeing the sights. Of all the German cities I’ve visited, Trier and Heidelberg were my favorite. The Porta Nigra in Trier was cool to see.

  • I’ve been to Germany twice.Went to Berlin around 10yrs ago and went to Dusseldorf this past year.Really enjoyed my time in Germany and looking forward to visiting more places there.

  • First of all, I just heart your hairstyle in these pics! I haven’t been to Germany. I’ve read at least 4 blog posts lately re: visiting Germany so I will take it as a sign! I would love to experience Oktoberfest!!

  • Yes I have been to Germany. I was in the west as well, I went to Heidelberg and the surrounding areas, Frankfurt as well. I had a great time! Heidelberg was a great start because it’s still old-world German, seeing a real castle on a hill for the first time was great. I’ve always had family in the military stationed in Germany and a friend from Berlin so I always knew about Germany, just never went. I definitely want to go back, I want to check out Berlin, I’ve heard sooo many good things about that city. I was in Germany 4 years ago around Oktoberfest which was a whole other experience lol. German culture is fun, they openly celebrate life.

  • OMG, I freakin’ love Germany. the pictures brought back great memories for me when I was there. I agree that the small towns are the best. Quaint and cute and gorgeous. Thank you for the great German memories.

  • I have never been to Germany and to be totally honest, it is not at the top of my travel list. I have no idea why. The christmas markets do appeal to me though! Any tips for someone travelling there for the first time? Someone who has no German friends/partners that is 🙂

  • Although I’ve been living in Germany for the longest time of my life, I’ve never heard of this little city before… But I love your description and pictures of it! And it’s been way too long since I had a Windbeutel like that – yumm 🙂

  • I was in Germany when I was 11 – it was on a coach trip of Europe and the German hotel we were in was by far the worst, both in practicalities as well as service. they were SO rude to us!!! They also didn’t cater to the Hindu family on the trip who were vegetarian so all they could eat were potatoes. sad days.

however, Germany does appeal to me, particulary the rural areas. I’ve considered doing the Peublo Inglis Black Forest week. I blame Candace for that – http://www.candaceroserardon.com/2012/05/pueblo-ingles-spain/.

Looks like you had a lovely time – do you like German food?

  • Yes, I love Germany!! My first time in Germany was last year when I came to visit some German friends during a Euro trip that I took. I loved it so much that right after I graduated uni earlier this year, I decided to move here!

  • Germany is on the list of countries to visit. Initially, it was not on my radar (the language is not cute, sorry and it is not cheap) but I have met a number of Germans either randomly or through my beau’s work and they seemed to be either really cool or really strange, lol! My dad also lived in Germany back in the late 70’s for his culinary education. He always said that experience made him appreciate foreign food. So to that end, I would love to do Germany starting with Munich.

  • Every trip to Germany should revolve around food! 😀 I’ve spent quite a bit of time exploring the Southwestern part of the country, and I love all the charming little towns.

  • Aw, looks like a fun trip! Those mountains in the background look gorgeous, and the weather doesn’t seem too terribly cold.

I’ve been to Germany only once, and for a pitifully short weekend. I’ve been really wanting to check out Berlin and its art scene!

  • Germany is by far my favorite European country! My husband is half German, and his mother’s family still live in Dinkelsbuehl, which is a tiny thousand-year old town on the Romantische Strasse in Bavaria. (Think Rothenburg o.d. Tauber, but less touristy! Definitely worth a visit sometime, especially for their Kinderzeche festival in July where the whole town takes a holiday to dress up and re-enact how the town was saved from destruction during the 30 Years War!) Loved seeing your pictures in this post as it reminds me of there!
