I’ve decided: I’m going to blog more about New York City. I write so much about my travels but the truth is that things are on and popping in my new hometown.
In fact, too much is on and popping here. The city is sprawling and the options are many. Quite overwhelming, to be honest.
And while I pride myself on my internet research skills, poring over Yelp and TripAdvisor reviews to find new, cool, and interesting things to do in a sprawling city of five distinct boroughs can sort of be a pain. Should I go here or there? Should I do this, this, or that?
So when one Friday when Liebling we suggested we meet up in Manhattan after work, I was glad he named a place and saved me the hassle of trying to suss something out (can I just say I lub my hubs). PRO TIP: when in doubt always ask the locals (I use this term very loosely in Liebling’s case, since he’s only lived in NYC for two years now, but I digress)!
At any rate, he messaged me on Whatsapp in the afternoon asking me if I wanted to have a drink at a rooftop bar; he suggested we try out Bar SixtyFive, citing its prime location (in the Rockefeller Center, a short distance from where he works) and prime attraction (the view of New York City’s skyline).
Locals “in the know” will tell you that this rooftop bar is one of the best in the city. It is also where you get the best NYC skyline view for the cheapest price– while tickets to the Top of the Rock (in the same building, just a few floors above) and the Empire State Building will run you more that $30 USD per person, you can pay $6 USD for a drink at Bar SixtyFive and have access to a just-as-good-if-not-better view!
One Google search to verify that this was indeed the case and I was sold– being able to save coins is always a good look. A few hours later I found myself braving the already-packed westbound 7 train to meet him in Grand Central.
The day was bright and clear, which meant that the streets were full with shoppers, people on their way to meet friends for an after work “cheers to the weekend drink” and sunseekers hoping to work on their tans. We navigated our way through the throngs of folks crowding the area around 5th avenue, struggling to get human-free shots of the statues dotting the streets as well as the majestic St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Never one to miss a photo op, I whipped out my phone and did the same, even managing to cajole Liebling (who hates being in photos) into taking a selfie.
Bar SixtyFive is located on, you guessed it, the 65th floor. Get here when it right when it opens like we did (5pm on a weekday– it’s not open on weekends) and you’ll beat most of the after work crowd, leaving pretty much all of NYC’s skyline splendor just for you.
And how splendiferous is this skyline, folks? Pure eye candy!
Of course, this rooftop bar isn’t only about the views, though that’s probably the only reason I would come here in the future. While (alcoholic) drinks are reasonably priced (I nearly broke into a sweat when Liebling paid $6 USD for my Diet Coke), the food is quite expensive. We thus elected to fill our bellies later on at home. The bar’s decor is quite fresh and the menu looked promising, though.
