There may be a song (or three) about London Bridge, but the Tower Bridge has got LB beat in terms of beauty a thousand times over. Take that, Fergie.
London has an extensive network of bridges, most of which span the River Thames. The aforementioned London Bridge is the oldest (its first incarnation was wood and sprung up around 50AD!) and the Millennium Bridge takes the title of the newest (and perhaps most wobbly) bridge in London after first opening to the public in 2000.
But the Tower Bridge is by far the most visually appealing.
Aesthetically, the Tower Bridge is super memorable, so iconic, that people mistakenly assume it is the London Bridge, that popular bridge that has been commemorated so often in song and folkfore.
Located in London’s east end, near the Tower of London, the Tower Bridge was conceived as a response to rapid population growth which put a strain on London’s existing bridges (high demand meant increased journey times and hours-long delays for pedestrian and vehicular traffic). The need, then, for another bridge east of the London Bridge became apparent. Enter the Tower Bridge, which opened in 1894, after 8 years of tireless labour from over 400 construction workers.
Liebling and I live a 15-minute walk from the bridge, so on a bright, sunny Sunday we ventured down to the riverfront and took a stroll along London’s delicious south bank.

How funny I just posted about Tower Bridge this morning also. It’s such an iconic landmark. I never realised how young it was – deceived by that cladding which makes it look as old as The Tower next door. It’s pretty inside too – in an industrial kind of way. Did you check out the spotlessly clean engine rooms with its giant steam engines. Or check out the views from the gantry. It’s interesting to explore these London landmarks. I lived in London for years and never noticed it much, then came back to visit and saw its beauty. Great by night too!
I love the Tower Bridge. When we visited we went up in it and did the whole tour thing which most people didn’t know that was possible. I got tons of pictures. I agree most do not know the difference between the two bridges although the differences are significant. I’m not even sure if I got a picture of the London Bridge. Maybe one. LOL Ugh! I’m missing London. Such a wonderful city to visit.
I loved the Tower Bridge! I hadn’t realized before how blue the metal constructions actually were, so I really fell for all the colors, the picturesque ornaments, and the stunning view from the Bridge! I would love to see it opened someday 🙂

I love the Tower Bridge. I stood on it in 1987. It was March and quite chilly, but so beautiful. I did think that was the bridge we sang about as a tot with fair lady, ashes, and falling down and all. Now I must return to London to remember better. Thanks for sharing.
Tower Bridge is quite unique, it only fuels my love for bridges that much more. It’s one of my favorite landmarks to see when I visit a new or old place.

Most tourists think Tower Bridge is London Bridge. The song doesn’t sound the same with Tower Bridge does it.
I totally agree that the Tower Bridge is the best-looking bridge in London! And what a gorgeous day you picked to go walk across it for this post! Man, I miss London.
Last time we were in London, we scored a great deal on Expedia and stayed at the London Tower hotel (I think) but anyway, we took that same picture! I agree, it’s definitely the prettiest. Sad we never actually crossed it though. Next time! 😀

I definitely thought the Tower Bridge was the London Bridge and didn’t figure it out until I overheard another stupid tourist talking about how he’d made a mistake. That was after I’d taken a million pictures in front of the Tower Bridge! Ooooops.

I too was mistaken at first but fortunately I never publicly shamed myself with questions or comments. When in doubt shut up? Yes. But I dare say I think maybe I prefer the Hammersmith Bridge to the Tower. Which is strange as I don’t typically like overly ornate things.
Just had to google it- wow it’s really pretty!! I’ve never been but might have to check it out in person now.
There are some gorgeous pictures. I knew that this was Tower Bridge precisely because Fergie got it wrong in her video which was pointed out many times. I only recently finally walked over the bridge and at the same time it opened up! Very cool to see when you are on it. I’d like to go back and see the exhibit inside.

Tower Bridge is 15 minutes walk from my house too, although on the opposite side of the river. It’s one of the london landmarks that refreshes my mood from angry to content. It’s so lovely! We watched the fireworks from it NYE.
I’ve now been caught on the bridge TWICE while it’s opened – both times late at night when it was cold and I wanted to be home to use the loo. Annoying! But i suppose a unique experience.
