I board a plane to Berlin in a little less than a week. A quick look at the forecast reveals some pretty frightening weather patterns…

… And that’s not even the temperature with “real feel” (i.e. windchill) tacked on. Now, I know that I was born and raised in Canada where it gets way colder than this, so technically sub-zero temps shouldn’t be a big deal. But, remember that I’ve been living in Hong Kong for the last 18 months, and the last time I experienced real cold was way back at the beginning of 2009. Conclusion? I’m not ready. Methinks I will freeze my buns off in the brisk, brutal Berlin cold.
Which brings me to how I will deal. I’ve already purchased a winter coat courtesy of Zara that should keep me warm and toasty as Liebling and I make our way from Christmas market to Christmas market. I’m still on the lookout for gloves, a scarf, and a hat, but think that those should be easy to acquire. What I’m really worried about are my feet, because, you see, my feet are ALWAYS cold. As you can imagine, winter boots are hard to come by in Hong Kong, where it never snows, and the weather rarely gets below 10 degrees celcius. My cute (yet practical) winter boots are somewhere deep in the recesses of my bedroom closet in Canada. I have, however, found a possible solution:
Ugg boots. Which, to be honest, I actually find to be quite ugg-ly. I know that warmth should be of primary importance, and that, in certain circles, Uggs are quite trendy. But I have never gotten on that train. They have some pretty good Ugg knock-offs in Hong Kong, so I’m thinking that I might just take the plunge (in the interest of my feet), albeit begrudgingly. Do any of you have Ugg boots? And are they warm?

i have (had) uggs. they are insanely warm and cozy! but make sure your protect them with some kind of spray…or avoid puddles! or since you won't be wearing them that often (it's for your trip right) maybe save a few bucks and get the knock offs – i've tried some that are same style and just as warm for 1/4th the price.
I have a pair from my sorority days (I know, I know, I'm still recovering from the brain cell loss I suffered :P). They're warm, but not warm enough for London, Ontario winters. 😛 For Berlin though, I think they should be fine. Keep in mind that imitation UGGs might not be as warm as the real thing, so you're probably going to need to wear socks with them (they're traditionally worn sans socks). When I went to Holland last week, I wore my fake Timbs, and my feet were cold but not too bad.
Also, be prepared that imitation UGGs have weak heels, so they might not survive after a season, but if you don't love them anyway, it's probably not a problem! 😉
I find them quite ugly as well, but let's be real here, they're warm! When I lived in Michigan I sure could've used a pair, but they weren't popular yet, or at least I had never heard of them before.
I’m not a huge fan of uggs but they are VERY warm. Uggs are trendy now, especially among students. Though, true fashionistas don’t follow trends! For your particular situation, it may not be a bad idea to just get a pair in the interest of keeping warm. Also, if you can get a knock off pair at a cheaper price all the better. I’m sure they will be warm enough for your travel purposes. Maybe you can find a pair that will match your coat/scarf so your colour palette won’t be off.
Btw, what kind of weather does Istanbul get? Hmm…. Berlin at it’s coldest this week(-9C); I would take that any day. It was -13C (-26C windchill) today WITH falling snow. Try to stay warm!
Uggs are so ugly they are cute. I dunno… I'm not gonna hate on the uggs.
Hey, so this could be weird but, when are you in Berlin? I'm visiting for a few days in December (22 – 24) and if you were down, it could be great to get a cup of coffee with you. Sorry if this is sketchy — I realize that while I have been reading your blog for maybe a year and a half now (if not longer), I rarely comment! So, no offense is taken if you are like, "Ummm no." @Xtine: hmmm, they're not warm enough for canadian winters?! that's disappointing! my boyfriend seems to think that i'll be okay in regular shoes, but after living in temperate hong kong and getting used to the climate here, im not so sure!
@mamachita: alas, making the difficult choice between fashion and comfort… guess i will have to stop being vain and get practical instead! michigan winters are no joke- i live in windsor (right on the michigan border) for a year… michigan is just as cold as canada lol…
@Samantha: you know what? i was under the impression that it would be super cold in istanbul, but a friend checked yesterday and it was 10 degrees celcius! so i might not need to dress as warmly there!
