Inspired by the oh-so-chic Gillian over at Confessions of a Young Woman and her “Look Book” series, I have decided to do something a little similar, and do a recurring feature on what I’m wearing. I preface this by saying that I am the typical girly-girl who loves doing different things with her hair, make-up, and clothing. I love looking up different trends on fashion websites and making them my own. I’m not a fashionista, by any means, but I do heartily enjoy fashion.
On Body Image: Wear the trends, make them your own, but don’t be afraid to say no if it doesn’t suit you!
I have learned over the years that not every trend is for everyone. It’s an ongoing process, but I have learned what looks good on me. While I, like everyone, lament over my body flaws every once in a while, I have come to terms (mostly) with my body type: athletic shoulders and arms, short waist, and long legs with wider hips, thicker thighs and a large behind. My stomach stays flat but I am prone to the dreaded muffin top. I have fast building muscles in my arms and legs that make me look like the Incredible Hulk if I work them too hard or too often.
So I have to adapt my look to my body type and shape. Short sleeves are good because I can rock my arms. Pencil skirts are bad because they ride up like nobodies business. A-line or high waisted skirts are winners on me. Low-rise jeans are a no-no (think plumber butt). Do you see what I mean?
Work Attire: Dresses for the win!
Anyway, the last few weeks we had had great weather in Hong Kong, so I was able to break out the summer dresses. I love dresses as they are super easy to wear, but classy at the same time.
Made in China:
I got this dress made in China (another plus about Asia is that you can get things custom-made and on the cheap!) and actually wasn’t that fond of it, but got a bunch of compliments on it from students and teachers alike. The best thing about this dress is the light, stretchy material. Super comfortable!
Pretty & Polka-Dotted:
This H&M dress is one my favourites. It is super comfortable and light as well, with a cute print that still manages to be classy but not over-bearing. I paired it with a black lace H&M tank and a belt to cinch the waist and give me more shape.
H&M Encore:
I really dig this H&M dress because it is work-appropriate but still semi-casual enough that it can be worn when I’m out and about on the weekends.
The little black (work) dress:
Would you believe that I got this dress years ago in Canada and that it only cost me $5? This lightweight dress is perfect for those hot summer days and stays relatively wrinkle-free. Come to think of it, this dress has also doubled as the perfect travel dress for me as well: it folds up into nothing, can be hand-washed, dries super-fast, never wrinkles, and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Bliss! This time, I paired it with a lovely scarf (given to me by a colleague) to give the outfit a little more flair. Who says you can’t do fashion on the cheap?
Shoes: The lower/thicker the heel, the better!
I love my heels, but they hurt my feet, especially since I do so much walking to and from work. The streets are sloping in Hong Kong and a lot of the pavement is uneven, so wearing stilettos is an accident waiting to happen. I opt for platform, thick-heeled, or low-heeled shoes for work, like the ones pictured below.
Anyway, that’s my take on the fashion/ work attire/ body image thing. What type of clothing do you wear for work? Do you have to dress formally or does your job allow for casual wear? How do you classify your style?

@Viajera: Thanks, lady! I'm pretty flat-footed as well so can't wear anything that has an extreme arch, unfortunately. I still like to wear heels but sometimes it's difficult to find styles that I like because they all come with an extreme high heel/arch! Will try to do some more posts soon!

cute dresses, i have recently started sewing and i just completed a dress similar to your dress #4.
I have a similar body shape to your but i'm alot taller. It is sooo hard to find stuff that fits right here in the states, that's why i learned how to sew.

I love your style! My body type is somewhat different but I also like A-line cuts and the only heels I wear are chunky/platform/not TOO high. I'm glad this will be a recurring topic on your blog!
