Yesterday, Liebling and I got on a tour bus and went to Stonehenge. Stonehenge is the famed prehistoric monument that consists of large, standing stones placed in a circular pattern. While the UNESCO Heritage site dates back to about 3100 BC, the origins of Stonehenge (i.e. the when, where, and why it was built) remain a mystery. I had seen the pictures and heard the folklore about Stonehenge for many years, so when I found out that it was a two hour bus ride away, I dragged Liebling out there with me, so that I could take a look in person.
Stonehenge can be a pain to get to on public transportation. It involves taking a train from one of London’s main station, and then getting off around two hours later in a town called Salisbury. Once in Salisbury, it is necessary to take a public bus to the Stonehenge, which takes about half an hour. Then, once at the site, you pay entrance (about 7 GBP for an adult). All of this comes at a cost of around 30 GBP. Not cheap. Instead of worrying ourselves about getting there on our own, Liebling and I went with a tour company (called Evan Evans). For 25 quid each, we were taken from London directly to Stonehenge in an air-conditioned coach. The 25 GBP fee also included entrance fees to the site, so in actuality we got to Stonehenge for cheaper and with less hassle than if we had done it on our own. However, doing it on your own does afford you a certain amount of flexibility, so that, if you fancied, you could spend some time and visit the surrounding towns of Amesbury and Salisbury (where there is a big cathedral) at your leisure. Liebling and I were not particularly interested so we opted to do the quickie tour instead.
It being a Saturday, there were tons of people at the site. But that didn’t stop me from taking a load of pictures in various poses, as you can see! Surprisingly, there wasn’t much in the surrounding area in terms of eating facilities other than two stands selling ice cream, sandwiches, and chips (I guess we WERE in the middle of a field, after all), so it might be advisable to pack a lunch for the long journey there and back.
The site itself was just okay. After having seen some other pretty cool stuff in my travels, these large flat stones in a circular formation didn’t do much in the way of impressing me, particularly after the two hour bus ride to get there! We were at the site for about an hour and a half, and after about 10 minutes, the novelty wore off for me. Liebling started getting bored, as evidenced by the photo below.
But despite feeling underwhelmed by the whole thing, I am still glad that I went and saw this mysterious monument with my own two baby browns! Go see it if you ever have the opportunity!

I went to Stonehenge recently and we went to Bath first and then took a tour bus there. Bath itself was a very pretty place!

@Marisa: we were thinking of going to Bath as well since the tour company we went with also had a package to go there, but we didn't organize it ahead of time and were too cheap to pay the extra cost, lol… Hopefully next time!
