We saw a lot of these in and around Lembongan (and Bali in general). I imagine they are some kind of offering; during many Chinese/Buddhist religious festivals you see a lot of this kind of thing in Hong Kong. To my knowledge, however, Indonesia is a Muslim country. So what are they offering, and why? Anybody out there know?

I found your blog through another blog. I think it's amazing all of the places you've been to! I went to Bali in January of 2007 and absolutely loved it! To answer your question, Bali is actually Hindu, not Muslim. The offerings are mainly rice and flowers, with strips of banana leaves twisted into different shapes. Not sure if there is any particular god they are offering to… I think they're just general, daily offerings.
beautiful photos…I had a student of mine go to Bali last year with some of his friends and he met a French girl on vacation there. They are still together today (he lives in Paris and her in Lyon for the moment). So Bali is both beautiful AND romantic 🙂
Yip they are daily offerings. Not sure the reason but I do remember seeing them a lot in Bali… and they were being scavenged by cats and dogs!!

Yes, they're offerings to the Hindu gods. They are a form of protection, and good luck. Since Indonesia is a Muslim country, I think the Balinese have a special arrangement with the Indonesian government that protects freedom of worship in Bali.
Bali has a lot of indian / hindu influence, too – so I guess they also uphold the same tradition.
Although indonesia is generally a muslim country, there are still other places that are commonly Christian, Hindu. (in some parts of Sumatra, for example, there are lots of Christians)
