…literally.
I moved into my new place last night, and it wasn’t without a large amount of blood, sweat, and tears (mostly figuratively- though I did sweat buckets). The hard part (i.e. finding a place, finding the wad of cash needed to pay for said place, complaining about minor things in said place in order to get them repaired, hefting very large and awkward suitcases into said place, etc.) may be over, but it is not all smooth sailing as of yet.
You see, I opted to get an unfurnished apartment, though there is a plethora of furnished options. Don’t ask me why. Seemed like a good idea at the time. But alas, I realized my fatal mistake too late. Because I am simultaneously working, trying to figure out the layout of my new surroundings, AND trying to get over jet lag, I just have not had the time/motivation/strength/wherewithal to get up and go shopping for all the things that I need. And believe me, I am realizing that there are plenty things that I will have to buy. A couch is an obvious one. But who remembers all the small, insidious stuff that one needs to make a household functional??? All those little, mundane items that you realize that you can’t really live without? Like a soap dish? And a dish drainboard? What about a fitted sheet for the mattress? Tile cleaner to clean those little scuzzies from the grout between the tiles?? That sticky wallpaper stuff that you put to line your dresser drawers? A scouring pad?? An ironing board? A bedside/end table? A soup spoon?? Coasters?? A bathmat? And the list goes on and on.
This is going to be expensive, and I wonder why in the world I didn’t just get a furnished place and save the drama for your mama. I queasily took a shower today, grossed out by the fact that I was still using the existing shower curtain, and didn’t have the cleaning supplies to disinfect the tub (even though, just days before, a maid spent the whole afternoon cleaning the apartment, I still have reservations).
But slow and steady wins the race, I imagine. These things take a while. I spent an hour in IKEA yesterday (MAJOR lifesaver, by the way) choosing a fitted sheet, pillow, and sheet/pillowcase set. Seventy dollars later, I walked out with all three, but wonder how much time (and money) it will take to make my tiny little house into a home. I guess I’ll soon find out!

i can sympathize. my place was pretty much furnished and i still felt like i had a ton of things to buy at IKEA!! how's the school stuff going??
Is there a craig's list over there? Or even ebay?
Between the two of them, I was able to furnish my entire place for probably less than 100€. You'd be surprised how cheap expats leaving the country will sell stuff, especially if they're in a rush.
hey xtina! yeah, tell me about it. IKEA=GOD right about now… i am thankful that it is relatively cheap. school is going awesome! though i feel like there is a huge learning curve, there is always tons of support, which is nice! how are things going with your school? when are your next holidays and where are you going? if we have the same break and you are going somewhere cool maybe i can be your travel buddy?!? when you coming to hong kong?? and when can i come to kl?!?!
ksam: thanks for the tip! you know, a number of people have been telling me to check out craigslist and another similar forum called asia-expat. i really didn't even think about that option! i'm definitely going to have to find out more!
right now things might seem overhwelming but once you get settled, it will be pleasing that you decorated and made your new home yours.
