The same day we went to Tanah Lot, we drove over to the UluWatu temple. It proved to be my worst nightmare. For you see, the temple had scads of monkeys running about, and I am scared of the little devils. However, being the brave adventurer that I am, I put aside my fears and threw myself into the fray so I could get a picture. Here’s the result:

But that was nothing compared to the American girl who was bombarded my a brood of them. Check out my video.

Despite being slightly shook up by the presence of such fearless primates, I managed to take a few photos of the surrounding area. Harrowing experience, but great views.

I love these photos 🙂 You're right, the views ARE amazing and I'm a huge animal lover, so the monkeys wouldn't have bothered me one bit. I was reading this and actually very envious you got to "hang out" with them! All I've got here in Paris are pigeons and rats.

@Crystal: Thanks girl! I love animals but monkeys are just too much for me! I feel like they'd turn on you at the drop of a dime… Yowzers! And YES YES YES we need to meet up this summer! I bought my tickets and will be in Toronto July 17th to August 26th!! When will you be in Canada?!?
@Chizzy: Being brave nearly got me mauled, lol. The camera I'm using is the Lumix LX5. It's small and takes pretty good pictures so I love it!

oh monkeys, animal lover or not I don't like them, they are not cute and cuddly like Curious George, I've seen them grab a bottle os Sunny D from a child at the zoo in India (no they were not one of the animals on exhibit). Watch one episode of the Rebel Monkeys of Jaipur (Discovery or Nat. Geo) you'll see what they are capable of. They suggest getting a rabies shot before going to anywhere monkeys roam.
Those monkeys are NO joke. One jumped on me in the Monkey Forest. Ack! I would not let any get near me. That's okay. I didn't get a chance to go to Uluwatu but it seems like it was very nice.

@SunSoaker: I think that we, at least in North America, have been socialized to believe that monkeys are cute and cuddly a la Curious George. But they definitely are not! Remember that lady who got her face mauled off by her friend's monkey?
@Terri: To be honest, Uluwatu was a bit of a let down after seeing Tanah Lot. As for the monkeys, I am officially over them. If I don't see one in person for the rest of my life I'll be fine.

Animals that hang around tourist locations or major cities (the pigeons in downtown Chicago aren't scared of ANYBODY!) have lost their natural fear of humans and don't mind letting the people know who was there first!

I must have watched the clip five times, and each time more and more tears escaped my eyes from laughter. I feel bad for that girl and for laughing, but seriously, the monkey swiping at people: hilarious.
@homespunwisdom: Eww, you're right, there are tons of seagulls where I'm from in Toronto that aren't afraid of people at all!

When I was on Bali in 2005 a monkey at exactly this temple threw a stone at me from the tree he was sitting in!
