Stepping out in London: Sunday Roast in Notting Hill

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

Did I ever mention that my mom came to visit me back at the end of March? Her visit was short, only 6 days, but Liebling and I had the best (if extremely busy) time showing her around London and allowing her to get a feel for the city that is our adopted home. One of the best things about having her visit was the fact that Liebling and I got to do a bunch of touristy things that a) we haven’t done since moving here, or alternatively b) hadn’t done in a very long while. One thing we absolutely had to do while she was here was go to Notting Hill and have a Sunday Roast.

I’ve written about Notting Hill before on this blog; it is the well-to-do area of London best known to tourists for long avenues dotted with colourful houses. I first became acquainted with the area back in 2010, when Liebling and I walked around and ate a huge pizza (I swear, it was almost as big as our table) at an Italian restaurant there I unfortunately can’t remember the name of.

At the heart of Notting Hill lies Portobello Road, a long stretch of avenue that houses an outdoor market specializing in street art, oh-so-trendy vintage clothing shops, and various stands selling everything from antiques to brick-a-brack.

At any rate, you can’t come to London without taking a stroll around Notting Hill.  You just can’t. Which is why I just had to drag my mom here. In my opinion, it is hands down one of the prettiest areas of London. Wouldn’t you agree?

After a brief walk about it was time to move on to our next order of business: find a pub where we could fill our hungry bellies with scrumptious Sunday roast. What is that, you ask? Quintessentially British, it is a traditional main meal served on Sunday (often in the early afternoon) that consists of a sizeable portion of roasted meat, accompanied by works: roasted potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, AND Yorkshire pudding.

It is a serious meal. But then we are serious people.

So while my mother balked at the thought of consuming such a heavy, hearty dish (“how will I finish all that food!” she cried), I, resident tour guide and exemplary daughter, had to ensure she had the full British experience. Because when you come to London, you MUST indulge in a Sunday roast. Anything else is just uncivilized.

And hence, with a bit of coaxing, she ordered a roast at The Duke of Wellington, a pub located right in the thick of the action on Notting Hill’s Portobello.

She opted for the pork roast and Liebling had the beef roast. Incidentally, I *ahem* ended up having a cheesburger.  Don’t judge me.  The girl to my left in the light blue shirt ordered one and it looked so good that I had to get one, too.  Besides, I was craving french fries!

Needless to say, I was insanely jealous when their food arrived.  I’ve had Sunday roast before and it is tasty, particularly the Yorkshire pudding.

Admittedly, I have been travelling so much lately (see my posts on Paris, Brussels, Dubai, Peru, Nice/Monaco, and Norway) that it hasn’t occurred to me to share some of the stuff I’ve been doing right here in good ol’ LondonWould you like to see more posts on what hijinx I get up to in this fair city? Let me know! Also, have you ever been to Notting Hill or eaten a Sunday roast? Is it something you think you’d like to try?

  • This looks delicious! I love a good Sunday roast (I’ve only ever had it cooked by an English friend’s mother) and Notting Hill looks so charming. I’m sad I missed it on my last visit, but I’ll definitely be checking out the neighborhood and the restaurant the next time I’m in London.

  • Wow…the meals look so yummy! As many times as I’ve been to London I still have yet to head to Notting Hill 🙁 But your pictures are lovely!

  • You and your mom are so cute! Notting Hill, the movie, was just on the other day. Not a huge Hugh Grant fan but I do like that film. Four years here and I have not made it there yet, this must be fixed and soon.

  • I haven’t been to Notting Hill very often, but I love this area. The colourful houses really are a delight for the eyes and the overall atmosphere of the area is very nice and welcoming.
I never had Sunday roast since I arrived in London (“sacrilège !” ;)), but I had it once when I was living in Birmingham. It was with a family who was friends with my landlord/housemate and the portions were much bigger than what I can see on your pictures. It was definitely delicious and now you made me want to indulge again!

  • I’ve been to Notting Hill and was absolutely charmed by the surroundings; It was really quaint and quirky.

I haven’t done the Sunday Roast and anything involving food sounds fantastic to me. If I find myself again in London that will be a must do activity.

  • I’ve been *past* Notting Hill – I made a beeline for Portobello Market. But I’ve never had a Sunday roast. (Although that cheeseburger looks GOOD.) I will definitely have to revisit this part of town, should I ever make it back.

  • Mmmm, Sunday roast. I approve of you forcing your mom to try it, even if you backed out! And yes to more London posts – even if they do make me jealous 🙂

  • Your Mother is lovely. And that was a lot of food on her plate!!! LOL. It would be lovely to see more London posts. I have been to London but I didn’t try the Sunday Roast (I don’t eat meat).

  • To forget that your mother visited…

I hopped off the tube at Notting Hill, but only because I bought day passes to cart be around without needing to study the buses. And there I found a late-night kabob shop, and there I paid too much for a falafel sandwich. It was fine. Perhaps even good. But this is possibly something that people do when they no longer eat meat and can’t enjoy such things as beef Wellington.

  • I came to london and didn’t go to notting hill and I’m a veggo so I certainly didn’t sunday roast!

  • The Sunday roast looks delicious but since I am vegan I will not be knowing what it tastes like anytime soon.

Notting Hill looks very lovely. The colors make everything look fun and alive. One of these days I will make it over to the UK. I have always wanted to visit and tour the English countryside. I have a huge crush on British actor Richard Armitage. He is an incredibly handsome and sexy Brit.

  • When you mentioned colorful buildings my mind instantly went to Curacao! Have you or Liebling ever been there?

    • Never been, but I’m curious about it! I would love to explore that part of the world some day, my family is Jamaican but haven’t explore the Caribbean much!

  • It’s so nice that your mom came out to visit! It’s going to take some coaxing to get my parents to come out here to Asia, haha.

p.s. The food looks delicious! 😀

    • Tell me about it! I had to drag my mom out to Hong Kong to visit me when I was there 🙂

  • So happy to read something positive about London on your blog. I was beginning to lose hope! Your mum’s roast looks delicious and I have to say, I’m a big fan of Yorkshire pudding. A classic!

    • I do like London, I really do!! And I like it even more when we hang out. It’s been far too long! What you up to this week??

  • How nice you were to share it all with your Mom, and you are right that is one gigantic, serious meal.

    • I really wanted to make sure that she got the authentic London experience!

  • I love shopping on Portobello Road!! Last time I got a treasured toast holder which is sitting in my kitchen right now. Must try the Sunday roast next time. It looks like something my husband would love.

  • I just spent an afternoon (yesterday) in London, in particular, Shoreditch, in particular, Redchurch Street and Brick Lane. LOL! Loved it! When I return (soon) I definitely intend to stay at least the weekend and hopefully you and I can meet in person. You are so blessed to show your mom around in another country! Happy for you! Show her the world!
