• I cannot express how gratified I am that you posted those pics and spoke of your experience. Watching the pictures had me pensive and reflective. I don't know why but I felt a closeness I have never felt before while viewing photos. I HAVE to get there.
  If you don't mind, what tour group did you use Nikita? I am looking at GAP tours for my next trip and wanted some real experience feedback on tour companies.

• Thanks Rhonalala! It was an incredible experience and I have struggled with how to put it into words, which is why I put off posting about it for so long.

  As for the tour, my friend and I went with a British company called Absolute Africa. I know that GAP also runs African tours as well, but I think that Absolute Africa gives the same type of tour for less money.

• Oh, Africa … Out of all the places we've visited (thought quite modest compared to you!), Africa is by far our most favourite destination without question. Can't wait to return ourselves. I'm pleased to read that you also had the opportunity to witness the Great Migration – something that one can't really put into words. Since you went to Zanzibar, I'm wondering if you had a chance to tour Stone Town. Seeing the very podium on which slaves stood for auction and the chains that held them together was surreal and hair-raising. Very much enjoying going through your blog…

• @Grace: Thanks for reading! Yes, I did have the chance to go to Stonetown and see where the Slave Trade took place.. It was very sobering.

• Beautiful. Have been to Egypt, that's the closest I've been. Am rather hesitating, but then again, there's so much I still want to see and experience here on the continent where I've been living, before I start venturing other far away places.

• foosrock!: I would definitely say to go, but yes, I completely understand wanting to discover places that are closer to home first! If I had to do it again, I would have gone for a longer period of time. 2.5 weeks was just not enough! The continent is too huge. I'm thinking of going to South Africa or Botswana or Namibia next. 🙂 And yes, those are fries, although I think that they were yam/sweet potato fries. I can't remember anymore!

• This is amazing! I also celebrated this past New Year’s in Zanzibar. I was in Tanzania for five weeks doing a medical elective. It was surreal. As you said, the sunsets/sunrise in Africa was in my top two. Top contender being Amazonia, Brazil. I just wept when I saw the beauty of Africa, especially on top of Ngorongoro Crater. I felt like I was suspended in time and then transported thousands of years ago right in the middle of Eden’s garden. And I had those sentiments days after I was attacked for the first time (and God forbid the last) in all my travels, by 20 men, in a posh area of Dar es Salaam the day after xmas. So, the fact that I didn’t leave the continent right away and had such an incredible experience going on safaris on my bday, Zanzibar for New Year’s (while delivering 11 babies in the city hospital and Masai village to boot) says alot. I would be salty about any other country after being attacked. But the land of Africa was just too beautiful. Still, the corruptedness and violence is out of control.

• Really condescending that in most of your Africa trips all you think about is Malaria and how to run away from it.No need for condescending irrational fear as a westerner, no need for weird tales about malaria drugs giving you weird dreams.You dont even have to swallow drugs before symptoms, just use protection and stay in safe sites.No need for comical over reactions while in Africa

  Are you able to tell me which beach you visited in Zanzibar, the beach in your pictures look amazing, doing alot of research and it seems some of the beaches have alot of rock/coral once the tide lowers. Can’t decide which side of the island to stay on. Any recommendations from experience would be appreciated.
