By now, you’ve probably heard that major and unexpected snowfall has grounded over 800 flights in Europe, with Germany being the hardest hit. To our chagrin, Liebling’s flight from London to Berlin was cancelled yesterday. He had warned me last night over the phone that this would be an issue. He was supposed to fly from London to Berlin on British Airways on Friday evening, but by the afternoon, he got word that the three BA flights flying the same route were cancelled. So he correctly assumed that his flight, the last London-Berlin route of the evening, would get cancelled as well. It was his trusty iPhone, on which he checked the Heathrow airport website, that confirmed his suspicions. British Airways followed up with an email detailing the cancellation and the procedure for re-booking flights- only about 2 hours before he was scheduled to fly. Thank goodness he had been closely monitoring the Heathrow website and knew not to waste his time going to the airport.
After much stress and a ton of internet searches for seats on flights (which, according to Liebling, were selling out by the minute, due to the backlog of passengers whose flights had been cancelled), he was able to get another flight. This was, of course at triple the price of original one. But oh well. Ironically, he wont get to Berlin until Sunday morning, which is when I’m supposed to arrive! In fact, his flight lands 10 minutes after mine does! So I’ll probably run into him at the luggage carousel or in the customs line… Funny, no?
Of course, this is all assuming that MY flight doesn’t get cancelled somewhere along the way… I’m leaving super late on Saturday night and flying to Berlin via Moscow, where I’m willing to bet there is a ton of snow. Hope I don’t get stuck in Russia…fingers crossed!

My friend who lives in Russia reckons that their pilots are the best in the world because they can land planes in -35 degree temperatures on a snowy runway after drinking multiple shots of vodka. So you should be just fine …

@Canedolia- LOL at your comment! Your friend s logic is absolutely correct, though! I would imagine that Russian and Canadian pilots would be good at what they do because they are used to flying in ridiculously snowy and cold conditions!
