Firstly, Liebling arrives in Toronto TOMORROW! I am over the moon: I haven’t seen him in over 3 months! This is the longest time we’ve ever gone without seeing each other!
We’ll be spending the week here, where I’ll cart him around to all my favourite places and show him all the cool things that Toronto has to offer.
Then, next Friday, we leave for Guatemala, where we’ll tour around the country and practice our fledgling Spanish. Sadly, Liebling will depart Guate after two weeks, but I will stick around for 4.5 weeks in total. After he ditches me to go back to work in London, I plan to find a language school somewhere in the country and take an intensive Spanish language course. But more on that later.
I often get questions about how Liebling and I have managed to survive doing long distance for so long. A quick rundown of our relationship history for those who don’t know or who have forgotten: I met my German schnitzel almost two years ago in Hong Kong (for details of our first meeting, read this post). He was in Hong Kong working in the finance industry for a European company. We dated for about four months before said company sent him back to the UK for work- we have been doing long distance ever since.
Think about it. Four months into a new relationship, your boyfriend moves to a different CONTINENT. It is an 11-hour flight away. You are separated by 7 time zones.
Not the most enviable of situations.
Amazingly, we’ve made it work, and this relationship has been one of the most interesting and fulfilling ones I’ve ever had. But how have we done it? I’ll tell you:
SKYPE
– Seriously. SERIOUSLY. Skype is like the third member of me and Liebling’s relationship. Skype is amazing and I will sing its praises to anyone who will listen. Liebling and I try to talk to each other on Skype every day. When I was still in Hong Kong, we would talk on Skype before I went to work in the morning, and then again when I was finished work in the afternoon. Skype really has helped us to stay connected despite the distance. We also talk a fair bit on the phone, and have found that calling phones through Skype is very cost effective.
MAKING PLANS TO SEE EACH OTHER WAY IN ADVANCE
-I’ve never had to wonder when Liebling and I would see each other next: as long as we’ve been together we’ve always planned our visits way in advance. The benefits to doing this are two-fold: I always have a fixed reunion date to look forward to, and we save mucho $ on plane tickets because we book before they get too expensive. Case in point: this Toronto visit and Guatemala trip? We booked the tickets way back in February. Setting targets for when we were going to see each other has been very important as well- we tried to aim for every 6 to 8 weeks. This goal has been facilitated by the fact that I get tons of time off since I am a teacher. Liebling, working for a European company, also has a fair bit of vacation time to play around with.
USING LONG DISTANCE AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO TRAVEL
-Luckily, Liebling and I both adore travelling, and we’ve used this separation to discover different lands together when we see each other. In our relatively short relationship, we’ve travelled to Taiwan, Vietnam, Sweden, Italy, Croatia, South Korea, Turkey, Indonesia, and Singapore. I’ve also been with him to his hometown of Berlin, Germany, and have visited him in his digs in London. Crazy!

-It’s been said often, but it rings true: honesty is the best policy. Liebling and I have been open from the get-go with our intentions and hopes for the relationship, which is important when you don’t see each other for long stretches of time. We don’t have qualms about telling each other that we are not spending enough quality time, and actively try to remedy the situation so that everybody is happy and the relationship stays healthy. Having a target for being together in one place has also been pivotal in the survival of the relationship. Knowing that we would finally be in the same place this coming October (wahoo!) really kept things positive and made us realize that we were working toward a goal.

Yes, long distance is very hard! My husband played pro basketball abroad and we spent a lot time apart over the years, but like you I looked on the bright side that it provided the opportunity to go all over the world and in the interim we Skyped. Enjoy your upcoming vacation together!

Rodolfo once referred to Skype as "Saint Skype." I think that about sums it up. We honestly would not be married today if it weren't for Skype having made it possible for us to keep in touch in a low-cost way.
I think the last point is also really important, or at least it was for us. We were long distance for two years after dating for less than three months, and during that time we went seven months without seeing each other (twice!). That would never have been worth it if we hadn't known that there was an end date in sight with the plan of me moving to Chile after graduation. I've seen seemingly great relationships end because despite all the love, neither person was prepared to move, and while long distance is doable, it can't be indefinite.
Congrats on lasting 2 years with this giant strain on the relationship. I know it's so hard. I do have to say that now that Seba and I live in the same house and see each other every day, when I went to Paris, I remembered how sweet it felt to really miss him. Of course I'd rather be in the same country as him any day. But being away from somebody is a really great reminder not to take that person for granted.

You guys are adorable together and seem really mature about your relationship and its challenges. All of the points you mention are great ones, but ultimately I think it boils down to the connection you feel to someone in your heart that makes long distance work. If you doubted for a second that he wasn't the guy for you, I doubt you (or any girl in your place) would have gone to all the trouble and difficulty of making it work. My exhubby and I did that for nearly 5years. I was barely legal, ie, almost 18yrs when we met through one of my brothers who was his diving instructor at that time. We connected, ie, he pursue me in his totally uppercrust European way, I fell, he showed restraint and old school values by waiting, while making his intentions clear to my family. He returned to Europe whereby we corresponded, he visited, I visited. At that time, skype, internet wasn't prominent. Suffice to say the phone bills must have been astronomical for him 20 odd yrs ago. He never let on. When I graduated college, he was there, told my family I'm moving to Europe with him, married me and violà, still here, loving it…….

I am a newcomer to your blog but I love it. This story most resonated with me because of how similar it is to my own. My love interest is a South African citizen and his ability to travel is little bit more restrictive because a visa is required for almost everywhere. It has been a rollercoaster but he is worth it.
I’m a romantic and feel like love can conquer all, if the two parties involved are committed enough! Visas may be a barrier but if you yourself have freedom of movement you have the opportunity to compensate for your partner’s lack of mobility.

I am going through the exact same thing with my other half except we are not going to see each other for probably six months while I’m in Indonesia. But thank goodness for Skype and hopefully he will come see me in September.
I met my boyfriend while in Italy. Now that I am back in the States, we are also 7 time zones apart and in different continents. We also are an interracial couple, and we love to travel. We have been all over the UK, Italy (and Sicily), and France. We have plans to see each other in Portugal this December before I return to his city of birth for Christmas. Non vedo l’ora! (“I can’t wait!” lit., “I don’t see the hour!”). I also plan to return to Italy next summer and maybe visit Germany while I’m there.
We use Skype daily (today we talked for over 2 hours!) and Whatsapp every other second! For long-distance couples, I suggest downloading that app if you both have smartphones. It is like sending a regular text. Moreover, you can send photos, videos, voice recordings, maps of where you are at that very moment, etc. We use every single function and feel closer as a result.
We still miss each other terribly (it’s been 4 months now); however, with these technological advances, we feel much closer to each other. They make the wait to see each other again a lot more bearable.

Hey your post is very inspiring. I can definitely relate. my LDR/multicultural relationship is about 10 months old now. Last May we met in Peru, but he lives in Chicago, and I live in Philly. Since we’ve started dating we’ve traveled to China, Cancun, Costa Rica, Hawaii, etc. I’ve never been in a LDR before, and it’s a lot of work. Facetime definitely makes it SO much better, but sometimes it gets really hard and it gets discouraging. Yes, I love him and I think he’s great, but how do you cope during those times of the relationship when it might get easier before it gets better? (I..e he’s going back to school which will make it harder in 2016). Also, how do you navigate family being in different places? holidays? Are the cultural differences ever an issue?

This story is really inspirational and I’m reading it now because my boyfriend of 9 months is about to move to Africa for a period of time while I stay in the DC area pursuing medical school.. my question is, how do you know this early whether or not you will be in the same place one day so that you can make that your goal that you’re working towards? He hasn’t even thought about marriage or our relationship long term yet, he’s a one-day-at-a-time guy. So, how do we start this relationship without knowing a timeline of when we’ll eventually be together in the same place for good? He’s a free spirited guy and I think it might be a lot of pressure/too much to think about if he’s forced to think that ahead to when we’ll eventually be in the same place together?
