About to catch a flight to Guilin, China |
It’s a traveller’s worst nightmare: missing a flight. Unfortunately, this nightmare became my reality just this past Friday evening. *cue face falm*
But it was not meant to be.
After a long day at work on Friday, I rushed home, had a bite to eat (a tuna sandwich and a few bowls of Rice Krispies cereal- don’t judge me) and hurriedly threw my warmest clothes and some makeup (gotta be cute!) into a carry on-sized rolling suitcase. I took a call from Liebling (who was going to the airport straight from work) and organized where we would meet up. I bolted to the closest London Underground station and prepared for the pilgrimage to what has become my mecca: Heathrow.
Little did I realize that the journey there would result in my personal hell.
Let’s get this straight: the London Underground (also known as the Tube) SUCKS. I have no qualms in saying that, despite my short time in London, its subway system has become the bane of my existence. Anyone familiar with London’s transport system will tell you that the Tube is expensive, it doesn’t work much of the time, and is unreliable. I hinted about its inconsistencies in this post, but neglected to realize the full extent of its crappiness until Friday.
Because, folks, the London Underground made me miss my flight.
When I got onto the subway platform just before 5 pm, I actually gave myself a congratulatory pat on the back for leaving enough time to get to the airport (I am usually late!). Liebling had already checked us in online, so all I had to do was get there by 6:45pm. Easy peasy, since according to the Transport for London‘s website, even the longest route would only take me 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Via the ‘Journey Planner’ on Transport for London’s website TFL.gov.uk |
In theory, it should have worked. In practice it did not.
Everything went swimmingly until about halfway into the journey. I knew something was wrong when I had to change trains at Hammersmith Station and saw the the chaos on the platform. It was thick with people (many with suitcases) cursing, pushing, shouting, and sighing loudly. It didn’t take much to figure what was going on, yet an announcement not 1 minute after my arrival confirmed my suspicions:
There were major delays on the line from where I was all the way to the airport.
Need I say more? The abbreviated version of the events transpiring thereafter went something like this: pandemonium, mass confusion, trains so packed with bodies that I couldn’t get on the one I needed when it finally came, trains being re-routed so that people were on trains that no longer went where they said they did. Trains so full and hot and rank with body odor and fury that a girl standing beside me nearly fainted, had to crouch down on the floor to stabilize herself and get some air. The frequent stutter stops of the train as traffic on the rails came to a standstill because of “signal failures”. The frenzied looks at the time, and the slow realization that I would probably miss my flight. The frantic texts between Liebling (stuck on a train just ahead of me) and myself where I graciously told him he should get on the plane and go to Berlin without me should he manage to make it on time. The faint glimmer of hope that I would get there on time so he wouldn’t have to.
In the end, I didn’t make it.
The sprint through Heathrow’s Terminal 5 after the ridiculousness of the Tube didn’t cut it. I got to the British Airways counter at 6:58 and my boarding pass wouldn’t scan, despite Liebling having explained the situation only 10 minutes earlier to the lady at security (he JUST managed to scrape through security himself). I talked to people in various positions of authority who confirmed that I wouldn’t be permitted to board the flight, even though it wasn’t due to depart for another 25 minutes. I made a tear-filled, profanity-laced phone call to Liebling where I explained that the effing Tube messed up everything and that I wasn’t going to Berlin after all, but that he should go- it was his birthday for Christ’s sake and why should we both miss out? My heart broke as he gallantly volunteered to cancel his trip in a move of solidarity, but that would have just been silly.
Liebling and I in Italy two summers ago |
Still, getting left behind has got to be the worst feeling ever.
I went to the British Airways service desk and got into line with a bunch of people in the exact same situation. The agent who served me was understanding, but there was nothing she could do: school holidays (half-term break, which is the UK version of March Break) had just started, which meant that flights were stuffed to the gills. Besides, I would have to pay a change fee as well as any fare difference so it just wasn’t worth it. I asked if I could get my money back and the response was also negative: I had booked a non-refundable ticket.
I left the counter with drooping shoulders, then let my face crumple into an ugly cry for about 30 seconds (in the airport in front of everybody! How embarrassing!). I let out one strangled sob before I remembered where I was and pulled it together.
There was nothing to do but go home.
I was out a Berlin trip, 200 euros (the cost of the ticket), and two hours of my life (make that four, as it took me two more hours to get home on the Tube thanks to yet another service disruption). And I even missed Liebling’s birthday party. Boo.
There have been many highs in London, but there have also been many lows, of which this fiasco is one. London, some days you really suck. And Transport for London, you suck harder.
Have you ever missed a flight? What did you do?
Psst! Don’t forget to “like” me on Facebook if you haven’t already! Your support is much appreciated!

Oh man, that really sucks. 🙁 I hope you planned to do something fun with the girls this weekend to make up for it!
I missed a flight years ago. But it was because we were all hungover and my friend had to rush out the tube to hurl her guts out. Needless to say we got to the airport late and missed the flight. So we booked another flight(this was back in the day when Ryan Air was SUPER cheap and didn't charge you extras). Made for a great story, at least.
Clearly a bit $hit for you… here's a small tip the next time you're going to Heathrow and could potentially be cutting it fine for time.
Get on the Tube and go to Paddington, and then board either the non-stop Heathrow Express (15mins to LHR) or the Heathrow Connect (four/five stops to LHR, 30mins).
MUCH quicker than that terrible section of the Piccadilly Line that stretches from Acton Town westbound, you avoid all those people with their teeming masses of suitcases, and well, HEX/HConnect is just a much more civilised way of getting to the airport.
I LOVE the photo of you in front of that aircraft..beautiful blog.

SO sorry you missed your flight! I can imagine how you must have felt. I've had two near misses and they were both very stressful. The first was when my friend had come to visit from Toronto and we were going to Berlin actually. We had to go to Stanstead airport so got on a train that said it was going there. In the end it wasn't and we realised that about the same time as this other girl on the train. So the 3 of us ended up taking a taxi to the airport and just making it. We put in a claim at TFL for messing up our journey and actually got the money back for our cab which was a surprise. The second one wasn't bad as bad, coming back from Rome they almost didn't let me on as bag check in was closed I could feel the tears coming. So the woman said if I ran with my bags then I could see if I could make it on. In the end I did but I had to give up the wine I was carrying in the security check and forgot my belt as I was trying to get through quickly. After those close calls never again will I chance it.
Oh no!!!! Oneika, that sucks! I'm so sorry you had such a rubbish experience and miss your flight. I've only missed a plane once – I was flying to Frankfurt from Manchester. The plane had to come in from Frankfurt first but was late due to bad weather. We got to Frankfurt and all watched the connecting flight to SA take off without us. I got to stay in a hotel for 24 hours and remember watching in horror as the events of the Canary Wharf bombing unfolded. I had been there to meet my friend for lunch the day before.
That's terrible, my heart goes out to you. That dejected feeling you get where you heart drops is the worst. My first time flying to France was a teary disaster. The line to check in was unbelievably long, having been in line for more than an hour, so you know I was there early. Continental didn't even do the grace call: where the ask for passengers in the flight that's about to leave to come to the front.
I still had a couple of minutes to check my bag, and even then they wouldn't let me and they wouldn't check me in for the flight. It was absolutely disorganized and I haven't flow continental since. They were terrible. I ended up getting a flight the next day and even that was ridiculous, I had to get in line for 2 separate flights and each time they told me I wasn't registered for it although they printed my new tickets. I was livid and short of feeling defeated. I got to Paris a day late after classes had started. I was so embarrassed. Figuring out my way from Charles de Gaulle by train was another mess since my chartered ride didn't show up!!
Awww so sorry to hear this 🙁 I've never missed a flight, but I think I would be gutted (as you were). At least you can tell yourself it wasn't at all your fault – you did everything right and the universe (aka the Tube) was just against you that day. I would have told Max to go ahead and get on the flight too, had we been in the same situation. That was very gracious of you, and you deserve a little retail therapy this weekend!
I guess next time you'll leave yourself about a 6-8 hour window to get to the airport 😉
Not. Cool. At. All!!
How horrible! So sorry you had to go through that.
A similar situation happened to me when I lived in London, only I wasn't trying to make a flight, but a job interview. I got on the tube an 1.5hr before the interview was to take place and got stuck in a tunnel, between stations for an hour when a train ahead us broke down. Finally we pulled into the next station which was just 2 stops away from my destination and was told that journey had to be terminated because the train ahead was blocking the way. In the end I made the interview, £20 poorer than when I started the journey and 2mins before the actual interview time. I was sweaty, hassled and out of sorts when I entered the interview room. Needless to say I did not get the job.
Everyone who is new in London will go through something like this, Oneika so even though it sucks major ass that you lost all that money and had to miss your man's birthday, have heart. You're not alone. Today it's you, tomorrow it's someone else.
There are ALWAYS major delays on the tube during weekends (Fridays included). In general you can't get anywhere in London in under 2hrs. The tube only cuts about 20mins off your journey (when its running properly) and is not really a better alternative to the buses (which is why it supposedly costs more — BS). The trick, then, to travelling London via public transportation or even private car (due to the unrelenting traffic) is to leave yourself with LOTS of time to accommodate unexpected eventualities, especially when where you need to be is important.
When I flew back to Norway last April, I left my flat about 4hrs ahead of time. I got to the airport well in advance of my flight and had to wait around for almost an hour and a half, but thankfully the 45 mins added to my journey due to a signal failure did not affect my trip. Murphy's law can be a real bitch when you live in a congested city like London so you have to be one step ahead for it will bite you in the behind if given the chance. I'm sure this won't happen to you again now that you've experienced this. Life is all about living and learning.
Love the photo of you and liebling in Italy! Stunning! (Where exactly was the pic taken?).
Every Monday (because that's just how my week should start) I have to battle National Rail AND the Underground. If things are going my way, only one of the two will have a "minor" delay.
That sucks, so, so much!!! So sorry you had to go through all of that.
I've missed only one flight and it was do to mother nature. In summer 2010, I was heading back to Japan. On August 23rd, I was supposed to be on my 5PM flight back to Japan from Newark, NJ via a stop in Detroit, MI. That never happened because on that day, we had a freaking earthquake! I arrived at the airport thinking that everything would be ok, but NOPE! It delayed everything! Because my flight to Detroit was delayed, I missed my flight back to Tokyo, which in turn made me miss my flight from Tokyo to the prefecture (state) that I live in. THANKFULLY, I didn't have to pay any extra fees when I rebooked. I thought that I would have trouble rearranging my flight in Tokyo, but they were VERY understanding.
My poor London transport is getting battered in this post & comments. I so desperately want to defend it but the reality, as we discussed over lunch, is that it's over-priced and inefficient. Like I said, it either works perfectly (Victoria and Jubilee lines) or it doesn't work at all!
I watched Newsnight last week and the Olympic Games Director of Transport has said that during the games, people should add an hour onto their journey EACH way. Each way!!! All I can say is what the beep!? Very happy I don't have to commute!
PS – remember, it's all about the Heathrow Express.
Wow. I am so sorry that happened, Oneika. That just blows.
I have not missed a flight, but came close, back in 2000 when I went to see my mother (who had just moved to the West Coast).
The airport shuttle I took was goofing around and picking up as much people as they could. I believe I got to the airport about 15 minutes before boarding time and it was only by the grace of God that I even made my flight cos the check in line was LONG.
Needless to say, I never took that shuttle service again.
London's public transport is pretty sh*tty. I'm sorry you missed your flight. I've missed a flight once, from Heathrow to Washington. Luckily, I was put on a different flight the next day at no extra cost.
Missing a flight is the worst feeling. I always buy non refundable tickets and I get put on the stand by list which is also stressful since you never know until the last minute. I was in LAX 12 hours waiting for a flight to San jose and I had a flight to Hawaii the next morning with my whole family. I was going to rent a car and drive all night of I had to (7 hrs of driving). I lost it bc of traffic between San Diego and LA and my friend taking too much time to leave her house. I'm a pain when it gets to allowing enough time before a flight. Although, a train line out is probably not predictable. Really sucks that you couldn't go to his birthday 🙁 I know that London is doing a lot about their transit for the Olympics. Hopefully this will get noticed and they will make it better before the summer (and stay good)
That sucks, especially that they wouldn't put you on the next flight. Non-refundable or not, it seems awful.
I have only missed one flight. Similar story but in New York City in 2000. The subway just didn't come for a while. We got to the desk and they just put us on the next flight in 6 hours. So we made the best of it in the bar.
missed my connecting flight once from vancouver to Beijing. Since it was the airline's fault that the flight was delayed for an hour from toronto to vancouver, they put me up in a hotel and booked my flight for the next day. I quickly used the opportunity to see vancouver. Similar situation happened to my co worker on his flight to Beijing from london, all because of the TUBE!
But each time a similar situation happen to me, I just say to myself "everything happens for a reason" and lo and behold, i am often glad i missed that opportunity!
I remember when I was in London and had changed hostels, the next day the line nearest the hostel was closed. I had an early morning flight and had already checked out of the hostel, someone I knew in London said I could just crash at her place that night and take the tube in the morning. I'm so glad I did not take my chances…I just slept in the airport. Sorry to hear about you missing your flight 🙁
This is just awful. I'm so sorry for you. I've taken the Tube to Heathrow a couple times and remember it was very stressful as well, but never missed my flight. I almost missed one taking the bus to JFK here in NYC a few months ago; I was carrying my one year old and the buses to the airport kept going express by the stop. I was nearly in tears. If money were no object I'd only take car service to and from the airport every time. I hope you'll be able to plan a special bday celebration for Liebling when he returns.
Poor thing!!! I have come close to missing a flight, but never have. Fortunately. But I do understand your Tube journey. I traveled on the Tube for the first time last July. I thought it was so efficient. I got a little lost and ALMOST missed my flight to Yerevan, Armenia, but it would have been my fault since I didn't look at my departure time correctly. But I am glad you have recovered from this incident. Happy belated to Liebling 🙂
Oh no! That is the absolute worst. People always call me anal for wanting to be at the airport so far ahead of time, but I will reference this story next time! You just simply never know what obstacles can be thrown in your way. I'm sorry that you had to miss Berlin and Liebling's birthday!!
I've never missed a flight (knock on wood) but I did miss a train when I was in Romania. The same thing happened; it was a matter of the Bucharest metro system. My friend and I sat on the stopped train, watching the minutes tick down to our departure time – what a frustrating feeling! We ended up losing the money for our tickets and didn't get to go to Sibiu, but it actually worked out for us as we jumped on the next train to Brasov and ended up having a great time anyway. I can't say that I would like to relive that stress, though…
man that sucks! I'm sorry 🙁
OMG! This is my worst nightmare. I was so sad to hear you'd missed your flight and I wouldn't get to meet you this weekend. You missed some spectacular cupcakes but hopefully we can meet up soon!
I am soooo sorry to hear that you missed your flight to Berlin from Heathrow. I have also missed a flight, in the U.S., but that was due to being stuck in traffic on the freeway. If the ticket is non-refundable, do you at least get a credit towards a future ticket?
I have heard horror stories about the Underground and consider myself lucky that I had nothing but positive experiences in the 10 days I spent in London last April (the week before the Royal Wedding). Of course, from living in U.S. cities with subways, I knew to stay away from them during "rush hour" time and both the incoming and outgoing flights to Heathrow were early morning flights. I agree that the Tube is hella expensive, esp. with the USD-British Pound exchange rate.
An an aside: This is my first post to your site, but I've been following you since I saw an article you wrote for the Huffington Post.
No, I haven't (Thank GOD!!) I think I would have bawled right there and then – I don't care who was looking. Awww. I'm so sorry this happened to you. Do what I would do – eat some cupcakes and drink a few cocktails. You'll feel better, I promise!
Never missed a flight, although I've been close. Heading to Charles de Gaulle for an early morning hitch to Manchester the RER was delayed so the army could explode a suspect device on the platform (they didn't clear the platform, just had everyone stand on the other side) and I arrived with little time to get through security and find my gate. Ended up following a couple Brits who cut everyone in line for the metal detectors only to find my flight was also delayed, this time for several hours.
But I have missed the Eurostar because I trusted that the terribly expensive and inadequate Tube could get me anywhere in a reasonable amount of time. They were very gracious about it and let me on the next train with no penalty although the English employees thought I was French because they couldn't understand my accent and the French employees were left struggling with my pigeon French. The humiliation, I suppose, was punishment enough.
Oh my darling, my heart literally broke when I read this. What a tragedy!!! Wish I could give you a big hug. I only missed my flight once. I was going from Buenos Aires to NYC. I was stuck in major BA traffic en route to the airport and by the time I arrived I only had 40 minutes until my flight departed. BA regulation is 45 minutes ahhhhhh! I had an emergency exit row seat with a direct flight. I was put on the next flight, which ended up having a stop over in Miami at 4AM and I was put in the last row in the middle seat. Plus, I didn't get my veggie meal. Needless to say, I was not a happy camper for the next 24 hours. 🙁
That sucks big time! I hope you at least had an enjoyable weekend despite the train craze.
Aw, I am so sorry! You were wonderfully gracious to tell Leibling to go without you!
I haven't missed my flight like that – i've missed connecting flights because of snow storms and stuff. This totally sucks! 🙁
public transport – it seems like something so simple and yet it is so shit in so many places!
Oh honey, I'm so sorry! I feel like it's almost worse that you *almost* made it too – somehow that's even more frustrating than being even later with no hope of making it. I hope Leibling had a great weekend and that you two can do something fun in London to celebrate his birthday soon!
oh you poor thing! That really does suck! Hate that horrible panicky feeling when you realize that the unthinkable might happen and you might actually miss the flight! Boo boo boo!!
that completely sucks!!!! fortunatley never missed a flight, only connections, but as it was the airlines fault, I was always put on other planes. so sorry for you 🙁
The London Tube is PAINFUL!! On top of everything you mentioned it is also REALLY dirty and incredibly claustrophobic. I am so sorry that it ruined your trip for you!
Man that was awful and I am SO sorry. It must have been frustrating as hell.
Now indulge me as I go into a solidarity rant with you. Yep, I live in (near) London and yep, the transport system- this includes the tube, buses, overhead rails, heck even the motorways SUCK big time.
Oh it's all well & good on a late weekday morning, say anytime from 10am to 3pm (caveat: not a school or bank holiday AND not during the summer or Christmas period as a rule) then it's fun, everything seems to run on time, the crowds are manageable and polite.
Any other time including normal working hours etc it can be utter chaos- overcrowded, boiling hot (in summer), no assisstance in sight and interminable 'signal failures'.
When I used the tube or overhead rail for work I always caught the earlier service, just in case and heaved a sigh of relief each time I arrived at my destination on time with no drama.
When its' good it's ok but when it's bad the service is completely inefficient and unacceptable YET the fees go up each year regardless…always to 'serve you the customer better' of course.
*Cue cynical snort*
Rant end.
Here's to many, many more wonderful birthday celebrations with Liebling.:)
Happened to me too here in Holland. Super-sucks!
So sorry! I have had some crazy experiences on the NYC subway. Most days I love depending on public transportation, but other days I am amazed at the occasionally inept people that run it. If anything, I feel bad that you couldn't celebrate Liebling's birthday with him. Hopefully, you two can have your own celebration together.
Oh, I am so sorry that happened. I had something similar happen going to Heathrow on a Friday but it was my friend who almost missed her BA flight. We made in the nick of time so she did get on her flight. I love London but the tube can suck. You can take the Heathrow Express or just leave super early when taking the tube. I always left like 3 hrs early just in case because I have been stuck on the tube and for that I just take the bus it's cheaper.
ugh that sucks so bad!
Hope you get everything sorted out. I hate the feeling in my gut I get when I miss a flight.
we each rely on the dc metro and nyc subway, so we totally feel your pain re: the tube! we also included your post here: http://wp.me/p1Jv4V-Qr
xo!
The tube is such a pain, it's so unreliable. I think this song might sum up how you feel about the underground right now (Warning: a lot of profanity!) http://youtu.be/UymKurTBdhw
I actually ended up meeting up with a friend for lunch the next day!! 🙂
Haha! She should have just vommed in a plastic bag- no need to exit the tube.. haha.
Thanks for the compliment! Seriously, I think I'm going to take the Heathrow express from now on. Before I was too cheap (it costs 15 pounds!) but I lost 200E on this flight so it would have been better to just buy the express ticket in the first place! Sigh.
Wha?! I can put in a claim at TFL?!!? Where?! Damn!
Whoa! Doesn't it suck when you JUST miss the plane?! Argh
Awww! I get discouraged easily so something like that would have just made me want to pack it in and go back home!
Girllll if you only knew just how much retail therapy I did over the weekend! I probably could have bought 2 new flights… 🙂
Agreed!
Omg, I would be SO stressed out if I was late to an interview! Yowzers! I took the pic on the island of Capri!
But London is known for its horrendous traffic jams as per what I have heard, if I am wrong, feel free to correct me. So I guess you have to tube it, or leap into above ground transport which doesn't sound anymore better. it sucks though that the underground cannot be more reliable. I guess you will have to give yourself much greater travel time going forward.
Nah, I have never missed a flight. My parents did one time though, after I got a great bargain tickets for them and I was so excited about the deal I got. The ppl ended up missing the flight and had to end up paying more money. I was so annoyed at them.
Jules
I'm sorry – that sucks! But doesn't your travel insurance cover missed flights due to transport issues?
I had the same experience trying to get to Haneda Airport in Tokyo…I ended up running out of a station and hailing a cab to get me there faster at the not-so-cheap cost of almost $200…so painful
Oh man, that sucks!!! I'm sorry! And yes, the Tube can definitely be unreliable and unpredictable. Boo!
(I've also definitely done the ugly cry in the airport as well, haha!)

Throughout this awesome scheme of things you actually get a B+ with regard to effort. Exactly where you actually confused me personally was in all the facts. As it is said, the devil is in the details… And it couldn’t be much more accurate right here. Having said that, let me say to you what exactly did do the job. Your authoring is pretty convincing and this is most likely the reason why I am making the effort to opine. I do not make it a regular habit of doing that. Secondly, whilst I can see the leaps in logic you make, I am not necessarily certain of just how you seem to connect your details which in turn make your final result. For now I will yield to your issue but trust in the near future you actually link your facts better.
