Free-paper burn! Back in France

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

I love my Jamaican culture, which is so rich and ripe with proverbs, slang, and sayings that listening to someone speaking in Jamaican dialect is always a treat. “Free-paper burn” is a Jamaican saying that makes references to slavery, for, when the “free papers”(a slave’s pass or documents of freedom) burn, his vacation is over, and he must return to work. My mom says this often on a Sunday evening, or when, after a hiatus due to a holiday, it is time to go back to work and/or school.

This couldn’t be truer for me. My jaunt in Eastern Europe has come to a close, and I find myself once again in Nice, ready (or maybe not so ready) to start my course at the university tomorrow morning. I got back into town yesterday evening and went by to my Italian friend Nita’s place, where her boyfriend prepared us a lovely dinner.

Right now I’m getting ready to haul my stuff across town to the apartment complex where I have reserved a (tiny) studio apartment. The weather is great here (but what else is new) and I am looking forward to what lies ahead. However, memories of great times had in the last 10 days still stay with me. I have tons of pictures and stories that I don’t have the time to recount/upload so stay tuned and I will update in the next few days with tales of travel!

  • Hey, I say you're STILL on vacation with your tiny studio in NICE! Your paper burn when you get to Hong Kong…or back to Canada.

  • Love the blog….I am living through you this summer as I am teaching summer school and taking an AQ course…your writing is awesome and easily flows..a definite 4+!….Are you taking a language course at the uni there?

  • Hey Chris! Thanks so much for reading! Sorry I'm took so long to answer, I'm just seeing this comment!

I'm actually taking a course for French teachers in Nice… It's part of a M.Ed that I'm doing (so I can move up a level in the QECO/OSSTF ranks, hee hee)… What AQ are you taking?? And how's summer school? What do you teach??

    Thanks for the compliment! Cheers!

  • I don’t even know the way I finished up here, but I believed this publish used to be good. I don’t realize who you might be but certainly you’re going to a well-known blogger when you are not already. Cheers!|
