Last Saturday night, Liebling and I went to the Tate Modern Museum.
I’ll give it to you straight: I’m no fan of museums, and I, in fact, avoid them like the plague. However, Liebling had heard that Gerhard Richter, one of his favourite German artists, was having an exhibit at the Tate and wanted to go, so after some mild arm-twisting, I was convinced to accompany him. I secretly dreaded going but put on a brave face, hoping to at least soak up some culture through osmosis (and take a few pretty pictures of the artwork). As the museum is not very far from our apartment, we embarked on the 20-minute journey on foot, our cheeks stinging from the very crisp late-autumn air. The Tate Modern is a popular and widely respected museum. It is also free(!) to enter and open until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, making it the perfect (read: cheap) date night. Despite my initial reservations, I really enjoyed myself, and we spent hours perusing the exhibits, dispensing opinions on the artwork, and mitigating our reactions, which ranged from the deeply touched, to the indifferent, to the incredulous. Ever the documentarian, I took a number of photographs to chronicle our night at the museum.

I visited the Tate Modern musée when I was in London a few years ago and enjoyed it a lot. Contemporary art speaks to me a lot more than the paintings I'm surrounded by at work in the French Revolution museum, that's for sure!
I was drawn to the Hitler piece simply because it's so…strange. We have all seen portraits of Hitler, but this one makes you stop and think about what you are seeing. And at first, when I saw the pile of sunflower seeds, I thought, How can this be considered art? But when you explained that they are hand painted porcelain seeds, I was so shocked! Perhaps the artist was trying to show that something so banal and effortless at first glance can actually hide a surprising secret (hours and hours of painstaking work!!)

What can I say, I'm a sucker for a good museum. I'm biased and enjoy analyzing conceptual art (art history undergrad thingy)so I got a good chuckle out of mirror. Anything by the GuerrillaGirls automatically draws me…and the stair installation stuck with me.
I think you would have loved the Pompidou's Year of the Woman exhibit. I happened to catch it while I was in Paris and there wasn't a dull moment. From beginning to end.

I like you, do not like museums. So boring to me. The art from your photos were cool but just for me. I went all the way to Paris and skipped by the Louvre (I know you can relate) as I am just not interested. I really wish I liked art though.
Awww…I love the Tate. I also love that it's free. I love art museums but don't like archeological ones if that makes any sense. I'll look at paintings and sculpture but not an old pot, know what I mean? I was started the docents program at a major museum here in NYC, but I had to stop because of my last job involved too much travel. I wish I had stuck with it. I'd have been able to have the time for it now.

@Crystal: I took SOOOOO many pictures, it's embarrassing! I'm not an art buff but prefer contemporary as well! I find the old school stuff so boring! You are good at art analysis because that's exactly what the sunflower seed artist was attempting! But geez, what a load of work, hand painting all those things!

I've been to the National Portrait Gallery twice (and love it) but even though I distinctly remember walking into the National Gallery, I cannot remember if we actually stayed to look around. I think we changed our mind and went into the NPG next door instead.

Love museums but hate modern art. Perhaps I should re-phrase and say, much of the time I don't understand it and find people who 'read so much meaning' into a pile of white sheets..or an unmade bed – pretentious.
Give me a fabulously executed painting any day. Or a beautiful piece of sculpture but pretty please do not show me a 10 minute video recording of David Beckham with his carefully plucked & shaped eyebrows pretending to sleep and call it 'art' (some nonsense 'created' by Sam Taylor-Wood):(

I love art museums, but I bias b/c I'm a art major :).And being that art major, I have to correct you on one of your captions! The Picasso painting is Cubism not surrealism. Surrealism is best known from Dali's.
