It’s currently 14 degrees celcius in Hong Kong, but I’m freezing my arse off here. I know it doesn’t seem that cold (especially to you Canadians out there who are experiencing temperatures in the minus 20s) but without central heating blowing hot goodness into large, un-insulated rooms in massive, drafty buildings, I am majorly suffering. There are no radiators here in Hong Kong. No furnaces. No fireplaces. Which means that the outdoor temperature is also the indoor temperature. Which, in turn, means that there’s no real reprieve from the cold weather that has descended upon the city.
Me at work today. Note the faux-fur scarf I have on. I wore it all day, and wore my coat inside most of the day as well since it was so cold inside the building!
Again, 14 degrees celcius probably sounds really warm to you, but realize that it feels pretty durn cold when a just over a month ago it was over 30 degrees celcius. The drop in humidity also makes a difference. From June to mid-October, the humidity level is consistently over 90%- ridiculous but true. 37 degree celcius days with 96% humidity are normal during that time of year. In that sort of weather, even without moving, one could sweat buckets. You curse it, but then you get used to it.
And that’s the problem, along with the lack of central heating, of course. The weather’s changed so drastically that my body didn’t learn how to re-acclimate to (what should feel like) spring weather. Humidity is comparatively low, averaging at only 60 to 65% every day.
So I am freezing, even inside. What’s more, because buildings aren’t insulated here, and the walls are made of concrete, sometimes it feels even colder outside than in. Cold air seeps through poorly sealed windows. Hence, I walk around my apartment (and even at work) in a coat. One night, I slept in it, along with a scarf. I have a small electric heater that I move from room to room in my apartment, but miss the days in Canada when free-flowing hot air would blow through floor and ceiling vents, leaving me toasty and warm no matter where I was. At my job it is even worse, since the building is huge, located near a body of water, and has many floor-to-ceiling windows.
Last week it was colder (only 7 to 9 degrees celcius in the morning!) and I didn’t want to get out of bed. I moved fast during my morning routine, brushing my teeth quickly and taking off my clothes and dashing into the shower because I didn’t want the cold air in my apartment to touch my exposed skin any longer than it had to. Sad, huh?
