Berlin sightseeing by night: Photo Essay

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

Somehow, at least to me, cities seem more interesting at night.

Maybe I am intrigued by the lights, but walking around Berlin in the evening makes the city even more romantic and exciting than in the day. Follow me as I take a stroll around the city centre.

Liebling and I went to the movies one evening (to see the lacklustre Mission Impossible 4 (3?)) at the Sony Centre in Berlin.  The movie there is one of the few in the city that plays English films.  We parked the car by the Sony Centre and decided to walk around since we had time before the movie.

We found ourselves in front of Brandenburg Gate, one of the best-known landmarks of Germany. And happened upon a group of Jewish people dancing and singing in pure jubilation.  For what reason, I was unsure, but I was fascinated.

Our next stop was the Hotel Adlon, which is another well-known landmark in Berlin: it’s the infamous hotel where Michael Jackson dangled his baby Blanket over the balcony.

You may remember my post on the Berlin-bred treat currywurst. I could resist snapping this photo as we passed a currywust stand.

Christmas lights were up everywhere in Berlin.  I noted that they were almost always “white” lights- back in Canada the Christmas decorations on the streets are almost always multi-coloured.  Cultural difference?

We walked by this monument dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust. It is comprised of over 2000 slabs of rectangular stone.

We then directed ourselves toward Potsdamer Platz, an important square that is a former gateway and trading post.

Potsdamer Platz is also home to an exhibit displaying remaining fragments of the Berlin Wall.

It was time for our movie to start, so we quickly entered the Sony Centre complex and stumbled upon a mini Christmas market, complete with a gluhwein stand, the quintessential Christmas brew!

Do you prefer exploring cities at night or during the day?

  • I like touring by night or day. But, I admit that Berlin is much prettier and nicer at night than by day…at least in my experience.

  • I'm like you, I feel like cities have a different LIFE when night falls. I am a sucker for lamplight!

  • Cities definitely have a different vibe at night. When I was in Rome I liked exploring at night just because there were way less people about. I do prefer the day for picture taking just because my point and shoot isn't the greatest for night shots. Once I upgrade to SLR I'm sure that will change.

  • Wow, so much history in Berlin!!! I remember seeing a lot of those same sights and having the same feeling of wonder. Also — is it bad that the sight that excited me the most was the Michael Jackson Blanket balcony??

Anyway, I think I prefer daytime in the city, but I definitely liked Berlin at night… seemed much more magical with all the lights!

  • I usually do my sightseeing by day, but last time I was in Berlin I did it all at night. It's a great city to explore in the evening!

  • I think you're right, cities just take on a whole other personality at night. I like to explore during the day because you can miss things easier in the dark but exploring in the day and night is always the ultimate travel experience to me.

  • I agree, cities do have a certain magic at night. Wow, all those photo's are great. I've heard so many amazing things about Berlin- it's definitely on my places to go list.

  • It depends:)
I love exploring whether its day or night, beauty is beauty no matter what.
In London all the Christmas lights were multicoloured too, interesting.
    Hope the movie was fun!

  • come fly with me around the world…the safari prince…safari president…..the black university of the world….

  • Wow, the Brandenburg Gate is gorgeous all lit up! I think I prefer sightseeing during the day in terms of seeing a new place, but I do love the energy that cities have at night.

  • ah gluwein! I haven't had it in so long and I'm pretty jealous right now. German markets make this time of year in europe all the better.

mmmm sightseeing by night or day? can I cop out and say dawn or dusk. I love watching a city change as the sun comes up/down.

  • @Rhona: Agree! Berlin is NOT a pretty city typically!

@EvRev: Me too! Pretty likes make the world more beautiful…

  • @melissa: I really need to upgrade to one, too!! The quality of night shots is so good.

@Erika: It excited me too! Liebling couldn't stifle his groan…

@Lady: It's way nicer in the evening, I think!

@FlyGirl: I think attractions are way better at night as well. I've heard that there's a night zoo in Singapore that is super cool!

@Rashida: Thanks! Be sure to hit me up for recs when you make it to Berlin 🙂

@sprite: Yeah, so bizarre. Liebling told me that as far as he can remember, the Xmas lights have only been white in Berlin.

@anon: Why not?! Especially if you pay for my ticket!

@Emily: They just seem more exciting somehow?!

    @Dusty Soles: Good point!!

  • great pics! love your look too- great pops of color!

  • wow! this post makes me want to plan a trip to berlin asap!! my parents are going and I gave up on the idea with the expensive plane tickets. After seeing this post, i went into delta.com to check flights with miles and I almost have enough for europe… I love cities at night but I am always afraid of walking when its dark and late. If it is dark and only 6:00 PM I dont get scared. I have no idea why – never had a bad experience. If it is crowded and I'm not alone, Im OK. but as soon as I get to a dark alley I get scared. Most of the time I felt safe in Europe. Paris and London were beautiful at night!! In Cities where I don't feel safe I just enjoy the lights from the car 🙂

  • Great pics…There is nothing like wandering a great city at night:)

  • Quality Essay Writing is an art, That need lots of research in different topics after a good research writer shows his thoughts by clear words. Good Vocabulary and phrases show the existence of writer in his work that is what a writer ever dream for.

  • Unquestionably consider that which you said. Your favorite justification seemed to be on the web the easiest factor to take into accout of. I say to you, I definitely get irked whilst folks think about concerns that they plainly do not know about. You controlled to hit the nail upon the top as neatly as defined out the whole thing without having side effect , other people could take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thank you|

  • Great post! I?m just starting out in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it well – resources like this article are incredibly helpful. As our company is based in the US, it?s all a bit new to us. The example above is something that I worry about as well, how to show your own genuine enthusiasm and share the fact that your product is useful in that case
