Berlin Eats: Currywurst

I’ve been told that you can’t come to Berlin without eating a currywurst.

But I have been to Berlin 5 times and never had one grace my tastebuds.  Pure blasphemy in the eyes of a Berliner.

Seeking to rectify this massive oversight, Liebling took me to have my first one a few nights ago, at Curry 36, one of the best currywurst places in town.

For you currywurst virgins out there, a currywurst is basically a sausage assailed with curry powder, then doused in a sauce resembling ketchup.  The sticky, gooey mess is often accompanied by fries.

To be honest, the currywurst is not visually appealing. I’m not a vegetarian, but I’m not really a fan of meat, apart from chicken.  Still, when in Berlin, one must do as the Berliners do, and I am all about new experiences, even if it’s just so I can write about it on my blog. *wink*.

Besides, at  less than 5 Euros ($7 USD) for two wurst and an order of fries, I wouldn’t feel guilty if I didn’t eat any more after the first bite.

Not that that was a problem! I inhaled my share and actually chastised Liebling for not ordering more.  My palate is not particularly fine nor discriminating, food critic I am not, but the tender morsels of wurst mingled with the curry and sauce to create the most pleasant flavour. I can now see why the ‘combo’ comes with two wurst- the first one will leave you wanting for more!

  • Awesome! The first time I visited Wolfsburg, my (now) husband insisted I try currywurst. I was like, "Sausage? Ketchup? Currypowder?" *side eye* I was pleasantly surprised! Glad you enjoyed it.

  • I don't eat pork so the only sausages I eat are chicken and or turkey. If they have those, I'll give the currywurst a go. I'll try everything once, even street food.

  • I agree with Kvowels. Add curry and I'm all for it. Plus most things that come with a side of fries are sinfully delish and hard to pass up no matter how questionable they look.

  • I had currywurst (pre vegan of course) in Germany as it is a southern delicacy. It was….good from what I remember. I didn't eat much wursts while I was there but I had my fair share. good times and memories.

  • I always sprinkle some curry powder on my hot dog when I do them in the oven and I like the lil bite it adds to a boring hotdog. I'll make sure to have me a currywurst if I am ever in Berlin. The name alone is comical if nothing else.

  • Oneika, this is torture…. I haven't been home to Berlin in more then 11 years and dying for Currywurst and a Berliner Weiße. If you have the chance next time your are in Berlin, try the Currywurst at "Krasselts", Steglitzer Damm 22, 12169 Berlin.
    I was all smiles to see your picture at U-Bahnhof "Berliner Straße". My "Umsteigebahnhof" for many years. When you can't go home, something so insignificant as a picture of a train station, takes on a totally different meaning.

  • I wasn't a huge fan of sausage either, until I had some in England. I suppose the British and the German know how to do Sausage!! I'd be very interested to try this 😉

  • I tried this when I went to Berlin over the summer. Looks gross, but I found it to be tastier than it looks!

One day, one day…p.s. this, coupled with your kuchen post, leaves me running a severe risk of leaving my laptop screen with bites and bits of my broken teeth on it.

  • Currywurst was invented by Herta Heuwer in Berlin in 1949 as an affordable but filling meal for the people of Berlin at a time when food was in short supply.

    When you order your Currywurst you can ask for it skin on “Currywurst mit Darm” or without skin “Currywurst ohne Darm”. Sausage casings were in short supply in the Soviet-controlled side of the city. If you grew up in East Berlin, you like sausage without skin; if you grew up in West Berlin, you probably prefer sausage with skin.

    I’m not from Berlin, I prefer Currywurst without skin and in my opinion the best place to get it is from Fritz & Co (a Currywurst stall) on Wittenberg Platz in the Schöneberg area of Berlin.

    • The tale I heard was that the ‘inventor’ concocted the sauce from ketchup and curry powder from British Army rations during the Airlift. For some reason, the rations contained more of these ingredients than the garrison could ever use!

    We do love a good currywurst! One of our favourite foodie things to when visiting Berlin is to visit the Fritz & Co currywurst stall on Wittenberg Platz in the Schöneberg area of Berlin.
