Berlin: Cake in KaDeWe department store

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

The 10 days I spent in Germany over the holidays is making me realize I have a sweet tooth. Cake (called kuchen in German) is my weakness.

This is strange for me.  I am a salt and grease kind of girl.  I rejoice in french fries dripping with oil and animal fat.  I like carb-laden crispy seasoned treats like potato chips and pretzels.  Cakes and cookies have never really been my thing.

But increasingly, I find myself craving sweets (see my latest post on Brussels).  In the last two weeks, food-gasm after food-gasm has rocked my body upon the introduction of surgery goodies to my quivering tongue. “Saccharine City” is my new home.

My escapade at the Leysieffer Cafe in Berlin’s KaDeWe department store is partly to blame.  One afternoon after Christmas, I had the pleasure of going there, flanked by Liebling and his father, and indulging my sweet tooth.

Located on the highest floor of KaDeWe, the open-concept cafe was jumping with activity when we arrived and we feared that we wouldn’t find a seat.  Luckily, patrons were just leaving and we were able to snag a corner booth.

The waitress proffered us menus and we got down to the difficult task of deciding what to order.  While the menu had an abundance of lunchtime snack items like sandwiches and salads, we were dead set on eating cake.  Not that narrowing our scope made picking any easier- there were too many to choose from!

The range of cakes on offer was impressive. And daunting.  There were at least 10 flavours.

Even more intimidating was the fact that the names of the cakes were sometimes indecipherable- Liebling had to translate all the ingredients so I could ensure that I made the right choice.

After a few desperate minutes of hemming and hawing, I settled on the Pflaume Nuss: the plum nut cake. We designated our selections to the lady behind the counter and regained our seats, where the tea we ordered just minutes before was already waiting.

Decor and ambience is obviously a big part of Leysieffer’s appeal.

 The tableware and presentation made my plain ole’ Earl Grey tea look like a million bucks.  And the little square of dark chocolate accompanying the whole affair kept me satisfied until my cake made its appearance.

Shortly thereafter, the main event: our cakes made their grand entrance.

My plum nut creation with a dollop of whipped cream:

Liebling’s dad’s berry sensation:

And Liebling’s cherry crumble adorned with icing sugar.

They were even better than they looked. I admit, I am cuckoo for kuchen.

What about you? Are you a fan of cake and/or other sweet things? Which cake out of the ones pictured do you think you’d like the best?

  • I'm not big on birthday cake, but I do greatly love tea/coffee cakes like these ones! YUM.

  • Do you at least start with a proper meal, or do you just go straight for the sweet stuff?

  • There is NOTHING better than German kuchen, nothing!!! I would be 300 pounds if I lived in Germany and I wouldn't care.

  • YUMMMM! I put on weight during 1 week in Germany and this is precisely why. SO GOOOOD!!!

  • Mmmmm!! I have a giant sweet tooth and cake is at the top of my sweet's list!

  • What killed me in Germany was all of the bakeries on every corner…when I first moved there, my friends and became completely obsessed with the cream and sugar monstrosity, the Puddingstreuselschneke!!

  • Yum!!! I have a serious sweet tooth. And, it doesn't help that the boss has the back room loaded with sugary treats!! Although, these pics really make me want to get my butt to the kitchen and bake up a storm.

  • Uumm, I love kuchen sooo much. That was one of my fav parts of being in Germany. My absolute favourite was butterkuchen. I can still remember the wonderful buttery taste. So damned amazing.

  • It's posts like these that send me on a late night run to the Shoprite bakery in my pajamas looking for leftovers!!!

  • You are such a (food) tease with the pictures!!I LOVE sweets. I am such a sugar-head. I don't care for salt and grease. I would eat sugar all day long if I could. As for my cake choices, I would have yours and Liebling's (although not what I would choose for myself, but since I am such a greedy-sugar-monster I would sneak a bite of your father-in-law's cake 😉

  • Everything looks amazing!!!!! I must go to that place when I go to Berlin !! I could live on sweets only!!! I wanted to go in April but I think that I'm going to have to wait longer 🙁

  • I could eat all those cakes, no problem:)
    You're so right, ambience is important, enjoying delicious pastries with tea/hot chocolate/latte with good company and great service is bliss.

  • I LOVE cake! (except cakes and any other baked thing with raisins) And I love KaDeWe, I had the best lemon tart in my life from the Lenôtre Paris cake and dessert area. Mmm, I think I would like the cherry crumble or plum cake the best.

  • oh my goodness…that looks amazing! Glad you enjoyed your time in Germany!

  • Delish! I have a SUPER huge sweet tooth and I have to admit, when I lived in Austria, I had my fair share of "kuchen." Love it!

  • I am not a big cake or pie fan because quality isn't usually very good. But the cakes and pastries in the picture make me want to try each one hoping for that "oh my God" feeling that this is soo good. lol

  • @Deidre: me neither but I LOVE angel food cake. Can't get enough!

    @Monique: Nope!!

    @Andi: Me too! I'm actually kind of glad I left when I did!

    @Trippin: I know!

    @Audrey: Never would have imagined German food would be this good!

    @Butterly Kisses: LOL!

    @Naomi: Just got Liebling to read the name of that out loud! Whew, that's a mouthful!

    @speaktall: Bake, take pictures, and Fed Ex me a slice!! Pretty please 🙂

    @Rhona: Never tried it!

    @globe trotter: LOL! Laughing at the mental image 🙂

    @kvowels: It's so funny you say that because I was dying for a bit of Liebling's dad's cake but didn't dare to ask!

    @Terri: I know..

    @sprite: I think the atmosphere definitely heightened/enhanced the taste of the food!

    @Ajoa: Going to Paris next weekend so will have to put that on my list!

    @Mrs Pancakes: Indeed it was! Thank you!

    @Lenore: I can't either, it's too depressing to think about lol

    @Rashida: I would have had them all!

    @Erika: Apart from schnitzel, I know nothing about Austrian food! Is it similar to German?

    @Perfect10: Glad you liked!

    @gwen: It's weird because I was never a cake fiend either but I discovered my love for them on this holiday!

  • those look amazing. I'm not a huge sweet person either, but little specialized cakes like those make me happy!

  • We have a lot of kuchen here too thanks to the German influence, but it doesn't do it for me. I prefer the texture of US-style cakes with frosting. But I definitely have a sweet tooth and wouldn't say no to any of those desserts!

  • Cherry crumble?!?! How have I NEVER heard of that before?!?! (then again, I've never been to Germany). This is foodporn to the max.

    Like you, I'm someone who definitely prefers salty foods, but there's nothing better than cake that's done to perfection.

    I love Leberkuchen from Germany, too – they're like ginger-y, marzipan-y treats that may or may not only be available around Christmas. I ordered my bf to get me some when he went to Dusseldorf in November. Did you try any? 🙂

  • I am not really seirprsud from the fact that Nadine Labaki won the “Celebrity of the year title”. If we got back in time, we know that her movie “Caramel” put her on “Variety’s 10 Directors to Look Out for List.” Also, She also directed Nancy Ajram’s video, Akhasmak Ah. Among many other interesting accomplishments she has done, which you can read on . Her last movie “Hala2 lawayn” was a great hit! Which I believe made her win the tittle.
